2020 Favorites: Games.

Ah! 2020, Pardon my French when I say this but Fuck 2020, everyone hates this year but throughout the year the only thing that kept me -and most of us- sane was the games that came to the rescue, here are a list of my favorite games of the year in no particular order except for #1.

Doom Eternal is a frantic fast-paced hectic shooter that more often that kept me engaged and entertained throughout the 10-12 hours campaign, and surprisingly it has a good story too.

Drake Hollow offered an interesting take on town management with interesting little creatures named Drakes that you needed to protect and provide for, it is fun and cute and at times really hard.

Cyberpunk 2077 was my most anticipated game of the year and for the most part it delivers everything I wanted, at the time of writing this post I have not finished the game yet but I have put 75 hours into it and I am playing it on daily bases and I really like it, it is just a massive shame that this game came out feeling like an early access version.

Persona 5 Royal was not on my list, I put 130+ hours into the original and I didn’t think the added semester and few characters will make any difference and boy I was wrong, I bought this game based on friend recommendations and I put 190+ Hours into it, I really loved it and if you have played the original you owe it to yourself to go back to Kamoshida’s castle once again and adventure with the band of misfit phantom thieves and see the story to its true ending.

Ghost of Tsushima is without a doubt one of the very best games to come out last generation, one of the most beautiful artistic visions accompanied with perhaps what the best sword fighting combat ever and a beautifully well realized story about family, honor and duty that kept me engaged for well over 50 hours.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is good game, perhaps it would have been better years ago since the game has a very shallow world with some of the most static NPCs but that is not the worst thing not every game needs to be an Open-World game, the game is obviously serving as an opening to the larger FFVII arcs ahead and I am very interested to see where is Square Enix taking this game.

Resident Evil 3 Remake follows the fantastic 2019 remake of the 2nd RE game delivering an action packed sequel, it is a fun game and Jill is an amazing character, it is just way too short and the multiplayer part was meh, I wish they didn’t cut so much content from the original game and delivered a full remake instead but here we are.

Hades is SuperGiantGame’s Swan Song, it offered a beautiful game, amazing gameplay and a great story to follow along, I put over 50 hours into it and I kept going back for one more run, I should probably do one more run.

For the most part I liked Watch Dogs Legion, it is not a bad game and I really hope Ubisoft ends up building a better 4th entry to the series based on the mechanics they added in Legion, but for the love of everything that is holy give us a main character!!

Genshin Impact is an evolution to the mobile gaming and Free To Play in general, it is really beautiful and fun to play and I was really engaged in it for a few weeks, I decided to drop it for now and maybe pick it up again later in the future on maybe Nintendo Switch.

Before the #1 game, here are a bunch of games that I didn’t play (yet) but it could easily end up on this list if I did:

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Immortals Fenyx Rising
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2
  • Wasteland 3
  • NiOh 2
  • Desperados III

and here is a list of games that came out before 2020 and I played it in 2020:

  • Diablo 3
  • Path of Exile
  • Dauntless
  • Control
  • Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order
  • Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age
  • Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age
  • Destiny 2
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Gears of War 4
  • Gears 5

And my 2020 Game of the year is:

Animal Crossing New Horizons offered the much needed escape from how dark and depressing the world got during March and April (not that it is any better now), but it is not just that Nintendo managed to take their beloved franchise and give a new life and for someone who really loved the previous entries New Horizons really made me happy, the beautiful timeless art style and music looks and feels amazing on Switch and I cannot wait to play more of this game.
