The Man in High Castle (Series Review)

Th0C

The Man in High Castle is Sci-Fi Alternate history series that ran on Amazon Video for four seasons, it recently ended its run with a concluding series finale on November 15th, 2019. the show stars Alexa Davalos, Rufus Sewell, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (1-3), Rupert Evans (1-3), Luke Kleintank (1-3) and many more, the story takes place in an alternate history setting which the Axis forces won the second world war by developing the Atom bomb before the allies did which means the United States is occupied by The Third Richet and the Japanese Empire. The series is an adaptation of a 1962 Philip K. Dick novel under the same name.

As a big fan of the original Philip K. Dick and almost all Alt-History, I was very interested in the series from its early conception and the adaptation efforts, fans of the books know that Philip K. Dick always wanted and made attempts to write a follow up to his book but none of these efforts ever materialized into a Novel and the show tries to finish the story of High Castle and somehow effectively and successfully finishes it, but not flawlessly and the issue goes back to the same issue the book had, the central sci-fi mystery of the show is working against the contemporary story of the central characters. while the main characters are trying to survive a harsh world there is a mystery of an alternative world where the allies won the world which just muddies the focus and clarity of the main plot, and that has always been the issue of the novel and the show doesn’t do anything to fix that.

Alternatively, the show has another issue that just frustrated me the whole time, it juggles the main cast of characters a lot, the characters you start the show with are not the ones you finish it with them and they don’t always meet an interesting end, also the showrunners introduced few new characters that were half baked and it just felt like a waste of time to follow them while much more interesting subjects remained unexplored like Nazi Concentration Camps in the USA and how they were getting rid of unwanted races in the Richet or Japanese Pacific State, also some other elements get thrown into the mix while being left unexplored and that just adds to the pile of issues the show had.

That being said, the show has some fantastic performances mainly from Rufus Sewell who plays the Nazi Reichsmarschall who was an American army officer and turned Nazi after the occupation, eventually, he becomes the central antagonist of the show but the showrunners do a good job by making him a sympathetic villain with a lot of depth, my second favorite performance was Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as trade minister Tagomy, you might know him from his past roles in the cult epic Mortal Kombat as Shang-Tsung and as Sanga in Kickboxer 2, naturally, I didn’t expect a calm performance from him based on his past but he was my favorite character on the show, the show also does a really amazing job with the costumes and make them as authentic as possible and it is really an impressive job.

The sad thing it could have benefited from an extra season, the events of Season 4 is leading to an interesting era for the characters and it could have been interesting to see it, but either way, the ending is satisfying and leaves it open for your imagination to come up with what happens next.

Verdict: The Man in High Castle is a good show with great performances and it gives fans of the original beloved book a much-wanted sequel, I just wished it did a better job with the sci-fi twist of the story. (8/10)

Top 5 games that I spend the most amount of time on this decade:

As someone who spends a lot of time playing time-consuming games, it is nice to look back and see what games did I spend the most amount of time on this past decade, and that is what I did these past few days and I came up with a list:

Honorable mentions:

  • The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim 300hrs+
  • Monster Hunter World 346hrs
  • The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt 322hrs
  • Pokemon Heartgold 330hrs+
  • The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 320hrs
  • Fallout 4 289hrs
  • Path of Exile 300hrs+
  • Divinity Original Sin 2 250hrs
  • Borderlands 3 245hrs
  • Metal Gears Solid V The Phantom Pain 195hrs

#5 Guild Wars 2 with 575hours+
luke-dowding-gw2-original-movie-cover
I was more or less surprised at this number, I played GW2 throughout 2012-2013 but I stopped in 2014 and never touched it since, this what happens when the group of people you played with disbands in MMOs, and probably the most amount of time I spend on that game was with one character and 80% of my time was PvE and 20% was in the WvW PvP mode.

#4 Destiny with 590Hours+
290440-destiny-playstation-3-front-cover
When Destiny first came I honestly thought this will be my game of the decade, but soon the content felt like it was super shallow and limited, couple that with the fact that I didn’t have a large enough group of friends to play raids with on regular bases and my time with Destiny was cut shorter than I thought it will be, I still loved it and I have really good memories with it.

#3 Diablo 3 with ~700hours
p1_2387609_fd878fed
My time with Diablo 3 is divided between 3 versions of the game (PC, PS4 and NSW) and I have been playing almost every season since 2014, I count myself a midcore-solo player I am in no way a hardcore player and I play every season until I stop enjoying it, which usually come around the 50-60hour mark.

#2 Animal Crossing New Leaf with 900hrs+
Animal Crossing_ New Leaf
I bought Animal Crossing New Leaf in 2014 and I have played it almost every day since, I have sold my town 5 times ever since and I am so rich I can’t even begin to describe it, I really enjoyed this title it is one of the best games I ever played and the music will be forever a part of me.

#1 Monster Hunter Generations with 1120 Hours
572951-monster-hunter-generations-ultimate-nintendo-switch-front-cover
After I finished the main campaign and then the online campaign and then did every quest solo, I used to just have a room ready and waited for people to join me and I would just help them with whatever quests they needed help with, that is how much I enjoy Monster Hunter.

there you have it, with new Diablo and Animal Crossing and hopefully a Monster Hunter for Switch coming soon I will hopefully break those numbers in the coming decade.

My most anticipated 2020 properties (Games/TV Shows/Movies)

2019 was a solid year for entertainment but 2020 looks to be incredible! with new console generation on the horizon set for late 2020, amazing movies from my favorite directors like Nolan and Villeneuve, Games from favorite series like Animal Crossing and Last of Us and also great new IPs from CPR and Sucker Punch, here are my most anticipated properties for 2020:

Part I Games
Cyberpunk-2077-Johnny-Silverhand-Promo-928x483

  • Cyberpunk 2077: I believe CPR is a major contender in the “Best Game Dev” that is currently working in the game dev space, their 2015 hit Witcher 3 is a landmark in open-world RPGs and I believe they will redefine the genre again in 2020 with Cyberpunk 2077
  • Animal Crossing New Horizons: I am a massive fan of New Leaf and I believe I have clocked into it over 900 hours in the past 5 years, It is one of those games that keeps my mind active and I treat it like a daily chore, I cannot wait for New Horizons and see where Nintendo is about to take the game from here on.
  • Resident Evil 3 Remake: RE2R was fantastic, I am still thinking about going back to it at one point next year and play it again, when it comes to Resident Evil series RE3 has a special place in my heart and I am very happy and excited that we are getting the remake that quickly after we got RE2
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake: Another Remake of a classic Playstation game, Final Fantasy VII is another major landmark in RPG genre and the remake is going to be a big deal for Square Enix going forward, while it is a bit disappointing that they will turn the game to a bunch of parts but it is still nice to see where they will take the game from here onward
  • The Last of Us Part II: Naughty Dog’s much-anticipated stealth-action horror game is set to make a big splash in 2020, the original took cinematic games to a new height and the sequel seems to be a bigger and will leave you with a hole in your heart.
  • Ghost of Tsushima: looks to be the final Sony title for Playstation 4, and the studio seems to have worked on it for the past six years if not more, beautiful artistic designs with a realistic swordplay is going to take Playstation 4 by storm in Summer 2020.
  • Wolcen Lords of Mayhem: I didn’t expect an actual release date for Wolcen but the game is going to hit on January 30th, Wolcen is a Diablo-like action RPG that has been in development since early 2013, the game offers a class-less system for flexible builds, I am excited to see what the end-game of Wolcen is like.
  • Halo infinite: The launch title for The XBOX is going to be the biggest Halo title to date, this game will have an open world and RPG like progression and a live game multiplayer, all sounds good to me to be honest.

Aside from these, there are many games with no actual release dates that is expected to come out in 2020 like Watch_Dogs Legion, Gods & Monsters, Assassin’s Creed 2020, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2, System Shock Remake, Dying Light 2, Godfall, Hellblade 2 and other games that are rumored for 2020 like Overwatch 2, Breath of the Wild Sequel and others.

Part II Movies
tenet-slice

I won’t fill this list with all the upcoming superhero movies because I am gonna watch all of them anyway, but here are some of the films that I find myself very excited for

  • Tenet: Christopher Nolan’s latest action time travel movie looks like Inception on Meth, the first trailer made me extra excited for the film and I really hope July 17th comes here fast.
  • Dune: one of my all-time favorite book series that I loved since I was a teenager and I even loved the strategy games that were based on Dune, so when one of my current favorite directors decided to adapt the book and work with one of my favorite studios I lost my mind, I really can’t wait and the cast and early news about the production just seems to be incredible, I really really can’t wait and I hope this turns into a series of films.
  • The Last Duel: I love Ridley Scott and the man is definitely getting old and we might get a few more movies out of him before he retires, The Last Duel also comes from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck who in case you didn’t know won an Oscar for writing Good Will Hunting so this is probably gonna be great.

There are other films that I am very excited about but those came to my mind right now

Part III TV Series

aaron-paul-westworld-3-trailer-2-1558343663

We are living in the golden age of TV right now and 2020 looks like another big year for the small screen, here are some big names for me:

  • Westworld Season 3: after last year’s big twisty ending of Season 2 the HBO hit will return with Season 3 and will bring Aaron Paul to the series as Season 3 lead, the show seems to be very different from what S2 was and I cannot wait for it.
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10: I guess Larry David didn’t find his soul because he is coming back with S10.
  • The Outsider miniseries: HBO is adapting one of Stephen King’s best books into a miniseries starring Ben Mendelsohn coming this January.
  • Picard Season 1: the follow up to The Next Generation, Picard is set to star Sir Patrick Stewart as his iconic Star Trek character Jean-Luc Picard, the series has been renewed for a 2nd season as well.
  • Falcon and the Winter Soldier Season 1: The first MCU series on Disney+, the show will add much character development to the characters for their reappearance in future MCU films.
  • The Stand miniseries: being my favorite Stephen King novel and also amazing graphic novel adaptation by the way, The Stand will be a 10-episode miniseries coming to CBS all access and Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd will play Randall Flagg and that is super exciting!

Other shows like The Boys S2, Stranger Things S4 and The Witcher S2 with no release dates are very exciting to me as well.

My favorite games of 2019

With the year almost coming to an end, it is time to reflect on the best games of the year, as always the list is in no particular order except for the final game which is my favorite game of the year

  • Resident Evil 2
    a50a31b7-bf9d-458c-807e-a04b572864cf-13987-000007d476c67a14
The Capcom renaissance continued in 2019 with three very strong titles and they started with Resident Evil 2 Remake, it really is a perfect remake and it is also an amazing game and scary as hell, like I had issues playing this game at times.
  • Sekiro Shadows Die Twice
    1vfk2drsz9q21
I really love FromSoftware and their latest game is fantastic no doubt, maybe it wasn’t as flexible and versatile as a Souls game but it was pretty damn good never the less, also it might be my favorite FromSoftware story to date.
  • Far Cry New Dawn
    251D48D2-E2E5-45EF-AC7C-2E9B64CD054A-13987-000007D50BCFDF57
I am a sucker for an open-world game and UbiSoft usually delivers a well crafted open-world experience with their games, I really liked Far Cry 5 and I was excited for a follow-up, for the most part, the game is fun to play and it is nice to explore Hope County post Far Cry 5’s events even though the story isn’t that great.
  • Dauntless
    2AE53EFE-1FCD-475E-9836-A3A5A087C3A5-13987-000007D4E4A33BD4
Monster Hunter is one of my most favorite series and Dauntless is basically a Monster Hunter clone there is no way about it and it is nice that they did a good job with it, the game is fun and pretty and the Microtransactions are cosmetic only so it is fair to play for free as long as you want.
  • Sky Children of the Light
    E3ECB140-F8B6-45E2-89A5-A3BFA9186EA5-13987-000007D7859126EC
and yes I am including a mobile game, Sky Children of the Light is a very interesting game, it is, for the most part, a walking simulator like Journey was and it is great that the environment is not all desert, and it comes with some relaxing music, it is a fantastic “I can’t sleep” game to play.
  • Warhammer Chaosbane
    ED9AEB59-EA84-4A67-88E4-A3D93E8F024E-13987-000007D6DC90A7AC
for the most part, 2019 was an Action-RPG obsession year for me, my love for Diablo 3 and Path of Exile was rekindled and I played more games like Grim Dawn and Torchlight II as well, Chaosbane came out in 2019 so I can include it on the list, it is a very fun and well made Action-RPG and they do a lot of interesting things with the classes and the story was also interesting, overall I enjoyed Chaosbane and I would love an expansion.
  • Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
    DD016A4D-2FFC-4F21-9DFC-47346FC7C3B0-13987-000007D63FBCB3C7
While Resident Evil 2 is the best remake I have ever seen Link’s Awakening seems very different, to a point when I played it I felt like the game was always this version and the GameBoy version is a port of this game to Gameboy if that makes any sense, it is without a doubt one of the most beautiful games of the year and Nintendo continues to deliver amazing Zelda games.
  • Fire Emblem Three Houses
    37813EA5-7460-444F-A71C-C312210D1192-13987-000007D75D78B6B6
Three Houses is not a traditional FE game, it is more like a Persona meets FE in a sense, at times the school life and the whole loop felt annoying but the strong tactical gameplay and the fact that you can play it for hundreds of hours made me addicted to it throughout the summer
  • Control
    509DB472-E414-4141-9A11-D8EFEF0B09CD-13987-000007D552516D9D
Remedy’s first game that isn’t a Microsft exclusive in more than a decade was a triumph, the game is a 3rd person action Metroidvania that takes place in one of the most interesting locations I have ever seen in a game and it has probably the best story of the year, I really liked it and I hope they make more games in the same universe.
  • Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order
    8F4A5E16-BD9A-4226-92A2-AF8382110217-13987-000007D5A3FE8FC1
This is probably the best-licesned game I have ever played, I never expected a good game like and it was amazing, the game has many elements from Souls series and that is a good thing and the story and music and graphics are all amazing, I really liked this game and I am hoping EA will learn a lesson from it.
  • Death Stranding
    141C83F8-82E3-40B2-8D0F-882599AF100F-13987-000007D53589669D
Kojima’s new game is odd, it has a good Lovecraftian story, it has an interesting world and characters but the gameplay is boring and annoying, the progression reminds me of Red Dead Redemption 2’s which basically was there for the sake of it you could just ignore it so it just feels like a Story Delivery Game and I didn’t love that, but probs when probs is due the game has its moments.
  • The Outer Worlds
    A577618F-5DF0-4372-9C4D-606D5FFA29FC-13987-000007D7A518B67D
“From the original makers of Fallout and the guys who brought you Fallout New Vegas” is the marketing line for The Outer Worlds and I think it is the most appropriate line ever, if that line sounds appealing to you then you are in for a treat if not then stay away from Outer Worlds, I loved it and I want to play it again and make different choices this time.

Game of the Year:
D7FDC082-2F0F-4777-9EA5-6D1DD6DC632F-13987-000007D7EFFE8C11
Borderlands 3 was my favorite game of 2019, it does everything better than the other games in the series except for the story which I didn’t care about, the story isn’t bad it is just not as good as Borderlands 2, but B3 has an amazing gameplay, really fun progression and endgame and Gearbox has been improving the game well since launch so it is very awesome and I will continue playing it in 2020.
